Nanny Goat Building

Built in 2023 at 1535-37 N American Street, The Nanny Goat Building serves as my studio and exhibition space. Inspired by The Nanny Goat Market that existed during the 1800s around the corner from here, the Nanny Goat Building exists as a space to experiment and gather in community.

The Nanny Goat Market served as a central gathering space for Irish immigrants in Kensington during the 1800s. They were big proponents of class solidarity during union efforts in our neighborhood and clashed frequently with American born protestants that were imposing restrictions on their freedoms. In 1844 this all came to a head during the Nanny Goat Market riots, when protestants staged a bible centered rally across the street from the Irish market and church. These riots eventually led to Kensington and the surrounding neighborhoods eventually being officially entered into the Philadelphia boundary line.
